Who is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Although there are a couple criteria you must meet to “qualify” for whitening, the requirements for treatment are few. Basically, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy, meaning they are cavity and infection free, you can undergo teeth whitening. Before we proceed, however, we may ask you about medications you’re taking and other information to determine whether your discoloration could come from other causes. This treatment is specifically beneficial for enamel stains; if you have discolored teeth from another source, we can explore other options.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Most whitening treatments, including those you’ll find available at the store, use a similar active ingredient: either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide. However, commercial whitening products tend to have a weaker concentration, giving you only about three shades of bleaching power. Only in the hands of a highly trained professional like Dr. Radz can you get access to a more powerful treatment that brightens your smile by as many as ten shades.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

When you opt for take-home whitening, you receive custom plastic trays and gel as well as the convenience of whitening on your own. After applying the solution to the trays, you put them in your mouth for about 30 minutes every day for about two weeks. Over time, you’ll start to see the shade of your teeth lighten, but you need to stick to the full treatment plan to see the best results.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

If you need faster whitening, you can be treated in about an hour in our office. Our Zoom! Whitening solution is by far the most powerful, which is why we typically put up a gum barrier to protect this sensitive tissue. Shining a special light on your teeth, we can maximize the bleaching power and remove deeper surface stains without harming the tooth enamel.

Tips for Maintaining Your Brighter Smile

After treatment is complete, you’ll probably find that you want to keep your confident smile as long as possible. Although stains usually start to set in again around two or three years following whitening treatment, there are ways you can hold onto your results, including the following:

  • Avoid having deeply colored foods or drinks, like coffee, red wine, dark soda, soy sauce, chocolate, etc., that can cause discoloration.
  • Brush and floss your teeth daily to prevent surface stains from building up.
  • Come to our office for a routine checkup and cleaning every six months. Dr. Radz can help you make sure your smile stays brilliant and help you know when it’s time for retreatment.
